About Shema Studio

Shema means "hear" or "listen" — a word that captures everything Shema Studio is about.

Millions of people around the world still don't have essential literature in their language. Many of these communities are oral cultures — people who learn, remember, and share knowledge through spoken word rather than written text.

Traditional translation tools were built for people sitting at desks with keyboards and fast internet. Shema Studio takes a different approach: it's designed for translators working on phones, in the field, often without reliable connectivity.

Our Approach: LOMO-First

We call our design philosophy LOMO-First — Local, Oral, Mobile, Offline. These four principles shape every feature we build. They're not a critique of existing tools — they're simply the starting point that makes sense for the translators we serve.

Audio-First

Recording and playback are the core interaction — not typing. Translators can record, edit, review, and share entire passages using voice alone.

Offline-First

Every core feature works without internet. Download study resources once, then record and review on the go — in villages, on buses, under trees.

Oral-Culture Design

Icons instead of text labels. Color-coded states instead of written instructions. Large touch targets for real-world use. Every design decision asks: "Would this work for someone who thinks in sounds, not letters?"

Shema Studio integrates a proven 6-step study method that walks translators through listening, understanding, and articulating each passage:

Shema Studio bundles content from trusted, openly licensed sources:

  • Reference text — Full source text, openly licensed (CC0)
  • Study guides — Translation guides, key words, maps, images, and video clips for 10+ books

Many more resources will be added as we receive permission and determine their effectiveness for oral translation workflows.

Custom Content

Users and organizations can create and bundle their own custom content — and make it available to everyone or to vetted users within their network.

Open Source

Shema Studio is built with Flutter and open-source technologies. We believe translation tools should be accessible to everyone.
